Astor Piazzolla, najsławniejszy argentyński muzyk, wspaniały bandoneonista, kompozytor i aranżer, urodził się w 1921 roku w Rio de la Plata, małym mieście koło Buenos Aires. Zmarł w 1992 roku w Buenos Aires. Jego muzyka była rewolucyjną mieszanką tanga, muzyki klasycznej, swingu i muzyki współczesnej. Jego życiową ambicją było tworzenie muzyki nie do tańca, tylko do słuchania. W tych czasach traktowanie tanga jako muzyki wyłącznie wykonywanej na koncertach była niezwykła. Ale Piazzolla był nie tylko niezwykle utalentowany ale też niezwykle uparty. Nie zdołał przekonać do swoich pomysłów środowiska tangowego w Argentynie ale ostatecznie udało mu się resztę świata. Jego muzyka była oryginalna i niezwykle nowoczesna. Jego najsłynniejsze dzieła to: operita Maria de Buenos Aires, seria songów wykonywanych z Milvą, Koncert na bandoneon i orkiestrę i utwory napisane dla jego sławnego Kwintetu (np. Cztery Pory Roku, Adios Nonino, czy Libertango). Próbował również adaptować do tanga elementy rocka i muzyki elektronicznej.
Każdy fan tanga zna przynajmniej kilka faktów z jego życia, jako że był on najsłynniejszym twórcą tanga. Jest jednak kilka ciekawostek, które są mniej znane. Wybrałam dla Was pięć, które uznałam za najbardziej interesujące.
1.) Astor Piazzolla spędził prawie całe swoje dzieciństwo i część wczesnej młodości w Nowym Jorku i był dwujęzyczny. Mówił nawet lepiej po angielsku, niż po hiszpańsku. Dlatego po swoim powrocie do Buenos Aires dostał przezwisko „Johnny”.
2.) Znał Carlosa Gardela, sławnego pieśniarza tanga, kompozytora i producenta filmowego, i omal nie zginął z nim w katastrofie lotniczej.
Astor poznał Gardela, gdy ten odwiedził jego rodziców w Nowym Jorku. W Argentynie Carlos miał status absolutnej gwiazdy i był symbolem seksu. Polubił chłopca, który już wtedy uczył się grać na bandoneonie i dał mu małą rólkę w swoim filmie El dia que me quieras. Gardel chciał zabrać chłopca na swoją trasę koncertową ale rodzica Astora się nie zgodzili, gdyż uważali, że jest za mały. Dzięki temu możemy dziś cieszyć nasze uszy Libertangiem i Milongą del Angel, gdyż Gardel zginął w czasie tej trasy w katastrofie lotniczej w Medellín.
3.) W 1971 roku, podczas wywiadu z Tomásem Barną, Astor wyznał, że jego idolem jest Bartók którego fotografia wisi nad jego łóżkiem.
4.) Komponował zawsze na fortepianie, a nie na bandoneonie, chociaż nie był zawodowym pianistą.
5.) Lubił łowić ryby, szczególnie większe, najbardziej jednak uwielbiał polowanie na rekiny. Kiedyś powiedział: moim terapeutą (psychologiem) jest morze.

Astor Piazzolla, the Argentina’s most famous musician, outstanding bandeonist, composer and arranger, was born in 1921 in Rio de la Plata, a small town near Buenos Aires and died in 1992 in Buenos Aires. His music was a revolutionary fusion of tango, classical music, swing and contemporary music. His life ambition was to write music not for dancing, but for listening. In those days the idea of treating tango as strictly concert music was very unusual. But Piazzolla was stubborn as well as being very gifted . He couldn’t convince the tango community in Argentina of his ideas, but finally he managed to convince the rest of the world. He created a unique and very modern musical language and presented it at many international concerts. His most famous pieces were: the operita Maria de Buenos Aires, the series of tango songs, he performed with Milva, the Concert for Bandoneon and Orchestra, and of course most of the pieces written for his famous instrumental Quinteto (e.g. Four Seasons, Adios Nonino, Libertango ). He also tried to adapt some elements of rock and electronic music to tango.
Every tango fan knows at least a few key facts from the life of Piazzolla, the most famous contemporary tango creator. But there are things about him which are known less well. These are fascinating and sometimes even funny. I have chosen five of them that I consider to be the most interesting.
1.) Astor Piazzola spent almost all his childhood and part of his youth in New York and was bilingual. He spoke even better English than Spanish. For this reason, later, after he returned to Buenos Aires, he had the nickname “Johnny”.
2.) He knew Carlos Gardel, a famous tango singer, composer and a film producer, and he was almost killed in a plane crash with him as a young boy.
Astor first met Gardel, when he came to visit his parents in New York. In Argentina Gardel had the status of an absolute star and a sex symbol. He liked the boy who had just started to play the bandoneon and gave him a small role in his movie El dia que me quieras. Carlos wanted to take him on a concert tour, but Astor’s parents refused, because the boy was too young. Thanks to this decision we can now enjoy Libertango and Milonga del Angel, because during this tour Gardel died in a plane crash in Medellín.
3.) In 1971, during an interview with Tomás Barna, Astor said that Bartók was his idol and his photograph hung above his bed.
4.) He always composed using the piano instead of bandoneon although he wasn’t a professional pianist.
5.) He loved fishing, especially for bigger fish and above all he loved shark fishing. He once said “My psychoanalysis is in the sea”.
